National Light

ESI Design - NBBJ - 2022
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

What does a civic beacon look like for a democracy that is still unfolding?

Conceived for America’s 250th anniversary, National Light is an adaptable public installation rooted in a simple idea: every voice matters.

The experience combines interactive exhibits, a theater, and contribution stations that invite visitors to reflect on democracy, civic identity, and timely commemorations such as Veterans Day. Each response is translated in real time into an immersive 360-degree composition of light, imagery, and sound—transforming individual participation into a shared experience.

As visitors move through the installation, translucent surfaces reveal shifting visual effects while an evolving symphony of voices fills the space. Archival footage of defining speeches by figures such as Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr. connects contemporary perspectives with pivotal moments in American history. Continuously shaped by its participants, no two moments are ever the same.

Designed as a flexible concept that can adapt across scales and settings—from Riverfield to Philadelphia’s LOVE Park and the National Constitution Center—National Light evolves with each community and place it inhabits.
